Gulf Today Report On KGS Carnival – 2015

The carnival also raised funds for different charitable organisations, besides celebrating Dubai’s successful bid for Expo 2020 through a number of activities that were staged by the school’s students.

The Kindergarten Starters, as official supporters of the Expo 2020 bid, used the event’s theme to good effect in celebrating the emirate’s stupendous achievement and showcasing all the support that they had garnered for Dubai’s bid for Expo 2020.
On show were colourful posters designed by students on the Dubai Expo 2020 theme, “Connecting minds and creating the future” designed by the school’s students from different age groups. A huge banner bearing over 15,000 signatures by parents, staff, students and visitors in support of the Expo 2020 bid also attracted visitors’ attention at the carnival.

Students from different classes performed various acts — from acting to song and dance routines — to enthral the audience, while over 50 stalls having a variety of foods and various other items, including clothes, eyewear and educational books, also attracted the crowds.
Young children were amazed to try out the big bouncing castle and activities like basketball, bowling, hoopla, feeding the clown and many more, which were in place to engage young hearts. Moreover, henna designing in the traditional Arabic Majlis was one area which drew young girls and women.

As part of the festival, two prominent radio hosts were at hand to broadcast the show live to its audience. They interviewed several students, parents and teachers about how the school had gone about supporting the bid.
The festival was also attended by Ashish Ranjan, Senior Sales Officer, NBAD, who were one of the sponsors of the event.

Blue Ribbon Award for the year 2014-2015

As stated by Aristotle, “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives; choice not chance determines your destiny.”

Leading with the vision of excellence for the third consecutive year, ‘The Kindergarten Starters’ proudly presented the Blue Ribbon awards for the year 2013-14 to the staff for their invaluable contribution towards the school. The awardees included the outstanding teachers, LSA’S and teachers with 100% attendance for the year 2013-14. The senior management team, Assistant Supervisors, Counsellors, Heads of the Departments and Doctors were also honoured for their efficient leadership towards the school. The Principal, Mrs. Asha Alexander, commended and thanked the teachers and the staff for their continued dedication and diligence.

A few Parent representatives also joined this wonderful celebration as they contributed in their own ways to reward and applaud the teachers. The programme concluded with a grand dinner amidst photograph sessions of teachers with their awards and their on looking, proud spouses glowing with pride on their spouse’s achievements.

The celebration echoed the Principal’s promise to acknowledge the relentless efforts and dedication of our staff for the betterment and success of the school, year after year.

The KGS Kindness Mural and Friendship Bands

The weekly class assemblies in October incorporated songs, skits and discussions on little acts of kindness that all of us could engage in on a day –to-day basis followed by a strong message to do an act of kindness every day and note it down on a coloured leaf template. In the following week, the KGS Assembly wall came alive with a mural of several Kindness Trees with thousands of leaves filled with their kindness deeds. This kindness mural captured the little deeds of kindness that every child at KGS had done during the entire week. The flow of such good deeds never stopped at KGS as the students were motivated to share their act of kindness and pass on their message of kindness to at least five other members outside the school community. Every child at KGS from KG to Grade 5 either made or bought friendship bands. They tied it to the members in the wider community, which included friends and relatives in the nearby community. Several students were taken to the GGICO metro station and nearby areas to spread their kindness message ‘Do a kind deed and spread a smile’ as they tied the friendship bands to the commuters and visitors. They in turn had to do an act of kindness and pass on the friendship band to another colleague. This chain reaction of doing a kind deed, set the ball of kindness rolling at KGS and in the wider community. Imagine 5600 KGS students doing their acts of kindness, tying friendship bands and passing on this message to at least 5 other members of the community! The end result of this SEWA endeavor was conceivably 5600 students of KGS and 25000 members from the wider community having done a kindness deed bringing smiles to thousands of other members in the community who benefitted by these little acts of kindness.

Save the Wild campaign to the school

The project was undertaken to help protect the fauna of our environment, wherein students from KG to Grade 5 spread awareness about the need to save our wild animals that are endangered and on the verge of extinction. The purpose of the project was to orient students to the plight of endangered species and to help them understand and gain perspective on human issues that continue to endanger species and threaten our global environment. The project was dealt in two parts. The first part being understanding why some animals are endangered and the reasons behind it. The second part was to spread awareness in the school community to save them and suggest measures to protect these endangered animals.

The KG students learnt all about bears, celebrated a bear hug day brought bears and discussed all about different bears, why they are becoming endangered, and what can they do to save the bears. They all inferred that it is good to shoot them with cameras, but not with guns. The role play in the assemblies, Quiz pots and extensive research done by children of Grades 1 – 5, echoed the need to attend to the needs of the endangered animals worldwide. The collages, creative write ups, collaborative projects, displays and posters made by children were displayed at a stall in the exhibition. All the 5000 parents were invited to this exhibition and the message of protecting these endangered animals was spelt out loud and clear.

The eco ambassadors not only limited their ‘Save the Wild’ campaign to the school community but also extended it to the wide world by conducting skype conversations with other international and Indian schools doing similar environment projects.

A Truck Load of Warm Wishes

The school auditorium was inundated with heaps of blankets and huge piles of warm clothes on the 11^th and 12^th of January, 2015, as help came pouring in from all corners into ‘The Kindergarten Starters, Dubai’, a GEMS School. Several parents, students, staff, support staff from the KGS fraternity, friends and well-wishers in the local community responded immediately to the UAE Compassion Campaign spearheaded by the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan in support of the Syrian refugees battling the harsh winter in their refugee camps. The very thought of spreading the warmth of love, caring and giving was truly amazing and manifested itself in this huge collection of 1200 blankets and around 30 cartons of warm clothes. May this spirit of giving continue to bring a little joy and warmth to the thousands of refugees battling the bitter cold and the harsh winter. This opportunity for charity was made into a learning opportunity across the school. Students sorted out the blankets from the warm clothes as some of them packed them neatly in cartons while a few cleared all the plastic bags that were used for wrapping them. As they worked together they internalized the need for giving and empathized with the children of war dying in the bitter cold of the refugee camps. May this generous spirit of giving, caring, sharing and loving prevail at KGS today and always!

Embedding a Values Rich Culture through Education

Education of the Head and the Heart has been a unique feature of the educational approach at The Kindergarten Starters, Dubai. KGS has always reached out to give back to the community both local and global, particularly in times of need. The collection for the Syrian Refugees, the Rice Bucket Challenge collecting 6000 kilograms of rice for the homeless at Gaza, the 1000 blankets and warm clothes collection as part of the UAE Compassion drive, the collection of stationery for the remote schools in India, the Al Jalilia Foundation campaign, the 100,000 AED donated to Dubai Cares towards Primary Education, and the most recent Carnival collection of 25,000 AED for Red Crescent are some of the charity drives organized and initiated by the school community throughout the year.

In 2014, the Varkey Foundation partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to support the Schools for Asia Initiative. Through this initiative, access to quality basic education was provided to thousands of children in Nepal, India, Vietnam, Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Through the generous support of GEMS students, parents and staff a whopping AED 1,485,348.62 was raised through charity activities in all GEMS schools. The Varkey family had set up an initial fund matching scheme at the launch of the initiative to support the GEMS schools in their fundraising. Through this scheme the Varkey family had matched AED 408,129.25. Thus the total sum of donation to UNICEF from the Varkey Foundation was AED1,893,474.87. KGS is proud to have contributed 154,632 AED, which forms a large chunk of this donation for the Schools for Asia initiative.

The ethos and culture of giving and sharing will continue at KGS, instilling in children the most important universal values and accomplishing the most essential purpose of education, namely being a responsible global citizen. The KGS philosophy reiterates what Aristotle said, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”
